Finland – With Spirit and Fire
Ristinkirkko in Lahti by Alvar Aalto
Like the organ in the Lakeuden Risti Church in Seinäjoki, the instrument in the Cross Church in Lahti has 52 stops. Built in 1979 by the company Veikko Virtanen from Espoo, the division of the four manual movements can be seen in the asymmetrical facade: The Brustwerk, Hauptwerk and Oberwerk are centred on top of each other. On the right is the large swell on two levels, on the left the pipes of the pedal.
The organ prospect in Lakeuden Risti Church speaks the language of its construction in 1960, but it also surprises with its multi-layered and asymmetrical design, which visually sets this instrument apart from many other organs of the time. The Finnish organ-building company Kangasalan Urkurakentamo realised an instrument with 52 stops on four manuals and pedal.

Finnland Turku, Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri St. Michaelskirche, Turku Kathedrale
In 1980, the organ builder Veikko Virtanen built the present organ of Turku Cathedral. As can be seen from the prospectus, the stoplist with its 75 stops is in the tradition of the North German organ movement. Nevertheless, the organ is also suitable for romantic and symphonic organ works thanks to its richly scored swell. Despite its imposing size, the key action is mechanical. A special feature is a single-manual console in the lower choir gallery, which can be used to electrically control the organ’s Rückpositiv for continuo purposes.

Kalevi Kiviniemi, organist C Kari Kiviniemi
Kalevi Kiviniemi has not only recorded the complete works of Jean Sibelius – his discography lists almost 200 albums! From 1991-2001 he directed the Lahti Organ Festival and was honoured with the Finnish State Prize for Music in 2009. Kiviniemi is a world-renowned performer and ingenious improviser; a fabulous virtuoso who does not shy away from even the most breakneck transcription; an organist with his own Youtube channel; a highly esteemed jury member; and, last but not least, a humorous and extremely likeable artist. Clear the ring for Finland!
