Built in 2018 by the Italian firm Fratelli Ruffatti, Buckfast Abbey’s organ system is divided into two parts, both of which can be played from two identical four-manual consoles. The largest part of the organ, with four manuals, is located in the chancel of the church (Chancel Organ) and has, among other things, warm orchestral stops in the Solo (IV), as well as a Positive (I) with a sound inspired by the Italian Baroque. The West Gallery Organ has two manuals and is oriented towards French symphonic music in the tradition of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The sound of the 80-stop organ is distinguished by the two high-pressure reeds, the horizontal Pontifical Trumpet, which is equipped with stately scales and is visible on the case of the West Gallery Organ, and the sonorous Abbatial Trumpet, which is located in the triforium of the church.

Martin Baker won the prestigious prize for improvisation in St. Albans in 1997 for improvisation and is renowned for this high art. Trained at Downing College Cambridge, he has already worked in London at Westminster and St Paul’s Cathedrals before becoming organist at Westminster Abbey at the age of 24. In 2000, he returned to Westminster Cathedral as Master of Music, and was director of the famous boys choir. He was President of the Royal College of Organists and is in demand worldwide as a performer, lecturer and adjudicator. At Buckfast Abbey he recorded the first solo album on the new Ruffatti organ.
